Migration-RV style
Migration of humans, animals and insects have been occurring
since the beginning of earth’s existence. From the WWII mass migration of displaced
and punished European citizens to the millions
of Wildebeests seeming to amble in endless circular pathways upon the acrid plains
of the Serengeti to the mysterious pull
of someone unknown origin that propels the annual Monarch butterfly migration to a stand of trees in Mexico, migrations have
occurred and continue to occur annually.
And no migration discussion would be complete without recognizing
the most daring and well, kooky migration: that of the Artic Turn. It flies
from its Artic breeding ground to its Antarctic
destination- and then back again, each year ; a flight of over over 12, 000 miles. Ouch!
But there is a migration that occurs right here in the US,
each year without much fanfare and public recognition. There is no “Wild Kingdom”
cameras following this migration, no YouTube
Feature of a wildebeest, hesitating at the river’s edge
wondering who will be the first into the water. The hidden crocodile is
wondering also. One hoof from the shore…
and you guessed it. Lunch is served.
And of course one cannot ignore the great Steinbeck migration tale of the Joad family
No this migration is the campers and RVers that slinker
along our highways and roadways- destination: Campsites. I worked at a State
Park that bordered the Atlantic shore in a visitor center and was fortunate
enough to witness this migration and all if it’s Americanism. I saw simple tent
only campers heading to a rustic campsite that had no electricity and common
shared water. Do all of them drive Subaru’s? It seemed so.
I heard the rumble of
a Type C motorhome booming down the camp entrance road all 50 of it, big enough
to sleep 8 people and costing well above $200, 000. It has a :”CLEAR THE ROAD BUDDY!” look. Look out for that lowly Truck Camper, hitched
to a Ford F150 and barley able to sleep 4. And oh my God, please don’t crush
that hapless 5th wheeler!
Prior to this summer job I was lackadaisically introduced to
camping and Rving by Lucy and Ricky’s
1954 comedy, “ The Long, Long Trailer.” I remember the hilarious scene of Lucy
( movie name : Tacy) trying to cook a meal while the trailer was being driven
on the highway. Very funny. And the unremarkable
movie with Robin Williams, “ “RV- the movie.” Pretty lame and oh so
predictable.
But these two movies did have one thing in common: no one inquired
about the WIFI password and the campsite.
